The people’s deputy stressed that the newly elected Verkhovna Rada “will legislatively settle the problems of protection of rights and freedoms of children in order to improve life in our country”. He said that the Committee pays significant attention to preparing of bills on Ukraine’s accession to the Convention on Protection of Children and Co-Operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (Reg. No. 0014) and to cooperation in the sphere of intercountry adoption and amendments to several legislative acts of Ukraine in connection with Ukraine’s accession to the Convention on Protection of Children and Co-Operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (Reg. No. 2002).

The participants of the meeting noted also that the Convention on Protection of Children and Co-Operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (the so called Hague Convention) concluded on May 29, 1993 in The Hague determines that intercountry adoption may offer the advantage of a permanent family to a child for whom a suitable family cannot be found in his or her State of origin. According to the speakers, the Convention establishes the necessity to take measures to ensure that intercountry adoptions are made in the best interests of the child and with respect for his or her fundamental rights, and to prevent the abduction, the sale of, or traffic in children, etc.

The subcommittee Chair invited the Vice Consul to participate in the hearings “Consideration of bills on Ukraine’s accession to the Convention on Protection of Children and Co-Operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption and on amendments to several legislative acts of Ukraine in connection with Ukraine’s accession to this Convention” planned to be held on February at 2 p.m.
